History
Captain James Cook named Moreton Bay on May 16, 1770 during his voyage of discovery. However, the first European settlement did not take place in the area until 1824 as a convict colony. In 1867 a high-security colonial penal settlement was established on St Helena Island and soon became known as the ‘Hell hole of the Pacific’.
The name Wynnum is derived from Winnam the Aboriginal name for the breadfruit tree or pandanus palm.. The first land auctions took place in 1860. Further estates were later developed and named after Sydney localities such as Rose Bay, Darling Point and Manly.
